Koko:
Owlo! Owlo! I have something really important to tell you today.
Owlo:
Well, come on in, Koko. You look like you are bursting with news. What happened?
Koko:
So, I was drawing a picture of a butterfly this morning. And I made the wings the wrong shape. I got so upset and I crumpled it all up.
Owlo:
Oh, I see. That sounds like a frustrating moment. Did you try again after that?
Koko:
No. I just stopped. Because I thought, if I can't do it right, why even try?
Owlo:
Hmm. That is a very big feeling, Koko. I want to ask you something. Do you think Owlo ever makes mistakes?
Koko:
You? No way! You know everything, Owlo. You never mess up.
Owlo:
Oh, Koko. I make mistakes all the time. In fact, I made one just this morning.
Koko:
Wait, really? What happened?
Owlo:
I was writing a new lesson plan for our class. I spilled my whole cup of tea right on top of it. The ink ran everywhere, and I had to start all over again.
Koko:
Oh no! What did you do? Did you get really upset?
Owlo:
I did feel frustrated for a moment. But then I took a breath, and I thought, well, now I get to write an even better lesson plan.
Koko:
So you just... started again? Just like that?
Owlo:
Just like that. And you know what? The second one was much better than the first. Come, let me show you something in the art room.
Owlo:
Look at this painting on the wall, Koko. Do you see it? The one with the big splodge of blue in the corner?
Koko:
Yeah! It looks like someone dropped paint on it. It looks kind of funny, actually.
Owlo:
That painting was made by a student here, many years ago. She accidentally spilled blue paint on her picture. Instead of throwing it away, she turned the splodge into a little pond.
Koko:
Wait, the pond was a mistake? It looks like it was supposed to be there!
Owlo:
That is exactly the point, Koko. Mistakes can sometimes turn into the best parts of something.
Koko:
So mistakes are not always bad?
Owlo:
Mistakes are how we learn. Every single time you try something and it does not go perfectly, your brain is actually getting smarter.
Koko:
My brain gets smarter from messing up? That sounds a little bit silly.
Owlo:
It does sound a little silly, but it is true. Think about when you first learned to hop on one foot. Did you get it right away?
Koko:
No! I kept falling over. I fell like a hundred times. Maybe even more.
Owlo:
And then one day, you could hop perfectly. All those tumbles were not failures. They were practice.
Koko:
Oh. So every time I fell, I was actually learning how to not fall?
Owlo:
Exactly right. The falling was part of the learning. It is the same with drawing, and reading, and everything else we try.
Koko:
I kind of wish I hadn't crumpled up my butterfly picture now.
Owlo:
That is okay. You can always draw a new one. And this time, if the wings come out wobbly, what might you do?
Koko:
Maybe I could try to make the wobbly wings look cool. Like they are blowing in the wind or something!
Owlo:
Now that is the spirit, Koko. I love that idea very much.
Koko:
Okay, so here is what I learned today. Even Owlo spills his tea sometimes. Mistakes are not the end of the world. They are actually how our brains get smarter. And if your butterfly wings come out wobbly, maybe they are just flying in a really big wind. Next time, I want to learn about why our brains forget things sometimes, because I keep forgetting where I put my crayons.
Owlo:
That is a wonderful summary, Koko. And for the record, I have no idea where my pen is right now either.
