Owlo:
Good morning, Koko! Come in, come in. I just made some warm apple cider for us.
Koko:
Good morning, Owlo! It smells so yummy in here. Can I sit by the window?
Owlo:
Of course you can. That is your favourite spot, after all.
Koko:
Owlo, I was thinking about something on my way here today. I was walking through the forest path, and I saw two little birds meet for the first time.
Owlo:
Oh, how lovely. What were they doing?
Koko:
They were just looking at each other. Then one of them shared a berry, and they started hopping around together. It was so cute!
Owlo:
That does sound very sweet. Sharing something is a wonderful way to start a friendship.
Koko:
It made me think. How did we become friends, Owlo? Like, how did it all start?
Owlo:
That is one of my favourite stories to tell. Are you ready to hear it?
Koko:
Yes, yes, yes! Tell me everything!
Owlo:
Well, it started on a very rainy afternoon. Your parents, the Vos family, came to visit my school for the very first time.
Koko:
I remember the rain! I had my little yellow raincoat on.
Owlo:
You did! And you ran straight inside, looked all around the room, and said, very loudly, "What is THAT big round thing on the wall?"
Koko:
The globe! I thought it was a giant ball someone forgot to put away.
Owlo:
I heard you from all the way down the hall. I walked over, and there you were, spinning it as fast as you could.
Koko:
I just wanted to see all the colours go blurry. Was that bad?
Owlo:
Not at all. I loved your curiosity right away. I asked you what you thought it was, and do you remember what you said?
Koko:
I said it was a spinning candy planet. Because it had so many colours.
Owlo:
And I said, you are not entirely wrong. The world is full of wonderful things, just like candy. That made you laugh.
Koko:
And then you showed me the library! I had never seen so many books in one place before.
Owlo:
You walked in and your eyes went very wide. You touched the spines of the books one by one, very gently.
Koko:
I wanted to read ALL of them. Even the really tall ones I could not reach.
Owlo:
I told you that we had plenty of time, and that we could read them together, one by one.
Koko:
And I said, okay, but can we start with the one about foxes? Because I am a fox and I want to know everything about me.
Owlo:
We pulled out that big orange book about forest animals, and we sat right here by this window. And that was the beginning.
Koko:
So we became friends because I was curious and you were kind. Is that right?
Owlo:
That is exactly right. Friendships often start with one small moment. A shared berry, a spinning globe, or a question about a book.
Koko:
I really like that. So anyone can become friends if they are curious and kind?
Owlo:
Anyone at all. And the best friendships keep growing, because you keep learning and sharing together. Just like we do every single day.
Koko:
So, what I learned today is that friendships start with small moments. Like sharing something, or asking a question, or being kind. Me and Owlo became friends because I was curious about a globe and he was patient and kind with me. And I think next time I want to learn about how to make NEW friends, because maybe I can help those two little birds I saw today!
Owlo:
That sounds like a perfect next adventure, Koko. Now, shall we finish our apple cider before it gets cold?
Koko:
Yes! And maybe we can read the fox book again. Just for fun.
