Koko:
Owlo! Owlo! I have to tell you something really important right now.
Owlo:
Come in, Koko. I can see from your face that something happened today.
Koko:
I was SO excited for the school painting contest. I worked really hard on my fox picture.
Owlo:
I remember you telling me about that painting. You spent a whole afternoon on it.
Koko:
But I didn't win. Not even a little ribbon. I felt really, really sad.
Owlo:
Oh, Koko. That feeling in your tummy when something doesn't go the way you hoped — that is called disappointment.
Koko:
Dis-a-point-ment. That is a big word. It feels like a heavy rock sitting on my chest.
Owlo:
That is a wonderful way to describe it. Disappointment is that heavy feeling when we really want something and it doesn't happen.
Koko:
Does everyone feel it? Even you, Owlo?
Owlo:
Absolutely, even me. When I was young, I once practiced a song for weeks and then forgot the words on the big day.
Koko:
Oh no! What did you do? Did you cry?
Owlo:
I felt very sad for a little while. And that was perfectly okay. Feelings need a moment to be felt.
Koko:
So it's okay to feel sad when something goes wrong?
Owlo:
It is completely okay. Feelings are not good or bad — they are just real. The important thing is what we do next.
Koko:
What do you mean, what we do next?
Owlo:
Let me show you something. Come with me to the art room for a moment.
Owlo:
Look at all these paintings on the wall, Koko. Every single one of them was made by someone who kept trying.
Koko:
Wow, there are so many. That blue one with the stars is really beautiful.
Owlo:
That painting was made by a student who lost three contests before she made that one. She didn't give up.
Koko:
Three whole contests? And she still kept painting?
Owlo:
She did. Because she loved painting. And every time she tried, she got a little bit better.
Koko:
I do really love painting. Even when nobody gives me a ribbon.
Owlo:
Exactly. That love for something is more important than any ribbon. It is called passion, and it keeps us going.
Koko:
Passion. I like that word. I think I have passion for painting AND for eating berry muffins.
Owlo:
Those are both very fine passions. Now, here is something I want you to try next time you feel disappointed.
Koko:
What is it? Tell me, tell me.
Owlo:
First, let yourself feel sad for a little bit. Then take a deep breath. Then ask yourself one question.
Koko:
What question?
Owlo:
Ask yourself, what can I learn from this? Maybe your fox painting could have more color next time, or a bigger tail.
Koko:
My fox did have a very small tail. I could make it much fluffier next time.
Owlo:
See? You are already thinking like someone who grows from disappointment instead of stopping because of it.
Koko:
So disappointment doesn't have to be the end. It can be like a new beginning.
Owlo:
That might be the wisest thing I have heard all week, Koko.
Koko:
Owlo, can I summarize what I learned today? I think I am ready.
Koko:
Okay. Disappointment is that heavy feeling when something doesn't go the way we hoped. And it is totally okay to feel sad for a little while. But then we take a breath, and we ask what we can learn. And we keep going because we love what we do. Oh, and my fox is getting a much fluffier tail in the next painting.
Owlo:
That is a perfect summary, Koko. And I cannot wait to see that fluffy tail.
