What Does an Architect Do?
What Does an Architect Do?
Owlo! Owlo! Look at this drawing I made at home last night!
Oh my goodness, Koko. This looks like a very detailed building. Did you design this yourself?
Yes! I drew my dream house. It has a slide instead of stairs, a rooftop garden, and a room just for snacks.
I love the creativity. You know, there are people whose whole job is to design buildings just like this.
Wait, really? Someone gets paid to draw dream buildings all day?
They do, and they are called architects. An architect is a person who plans and designs buildings before they are built.
So an architect is like an artist, but for buildings?
That is a wonderful way to think about it. They are part artist and part scientist. It takes both creativity and careful thinking.
Hmm. But how does a drawing turn into a real building? That seems really hard.
It is quite a process. I think we should visit the school library and find some books on this. I have a feeling there are some great ones.
Here we go. This book has wonderful illustrations of how architects work. Let us take a look together.
Wow, there are so many drawings and measurements in here. It looks like math homework but way more exciting.
Those detailed drawings are called blueprints. A blueprint shows every part of a building, like where the walls, doors, and windows go.
So the builders look at the blueprint and know exactly what to do? Like following a recipe?
Exactly like a recipe. If the blueprint has a mistake, the whole building could have a problem. So architects must be very precise.
Okay, so architects draw blueprints. But do they do anything else?
So much more. Before they even draw anything, they ask important questions. Who will use this building? What do they need? How should it feel inside?
Oh, like how my dream house needs a snack room because I need snacks. That is a real need.
A very important need, I agree. Architects think about things like that seriously. A school needs big windows for light. A hospital needs wide hallways for beds.
I never thought about why buildings look the way they do. Someone actually planned all of that on purpose.
Every single detail. They also think about safety. The building must be strong enough to stand in wind, rain, and even earthquakes in some places.
That sounds really hard. How long does it take to become an architect?
It takes many years of studying. Architects learn drawing, mathematics, science, and even history of buildings from around the world.
History of buildings? Why history?
Because great buildings from the past teach us so much. The ancient Egyptians built pyramids that have stood for thousands of years. Architects study how and why they lasted.
So knowing old things helps you build better new things. That is actually pretty smart.
That is one of the wisest things you have said today, Koko. Learning from the past is one of the most powerful tools we have.
Owlo, do you think my dream house drawing could ever be a real blueprint one day?
With practice, curiosity, and a love of learning, absolutely. The best architects started exactly where you are, with a big imagination and a pencil.
I am going to keep drawing buildings then. Maybe I will design a school with a slide too.
I would very much like to attend that school. Now, before we wrap up, can you tell me what you learned today about architects?
Okay! An architect is someone who designs and plans buildings before they get built. They draw blueprints, which are like recipes for buildings. They think about who will use the building and what they need. They also make sure buildings are safe and strong. And they study art, math, science, and even old buildings from history. Oh, and if I become an architect, I am one hundred percent adding a snack room to every building.
That last part might just become your signature style, Koko. Keep drawing, keep dreaming, and keep asking great questions.
