Owlo, I found something really cool in the library today. It was a big book about places around the world!

The LARGEST? How big is that?
Imagine flying on an airplane for eleven hours straight. That is how long it takes just to cross Russia from one side to the other.
That is so much bigger than I thought. My legs would get so tired just thinking about it.
It is truly enormous. Because it is so big, Russia has many different kinds of weather and landscapes all at once.
Like what kinds?
In the north, there are frozen lands called tundra, where it is icy and very cold almost all year. In the south, there are warmer forests and wide open grasslands.
So some parts are freezing and some parts are not so cold? That is so strange for one country.
Exactly right. And in the middle, there are huge forests called the taiga. The taiga is the largest forest in the world, full of pine trees and wildlife.
Wow. So what do people who live in Russia actually do every day? What is life like for kids there?
Great question. Children in Russia go to school, just like you. They study reading, math, science, and many of them also learn music or art from a young age.
Music and art at school? That sounds like the best kind of school day.
Russians have a very strong tradition of music, ballet, and storytelling. Many famous composers and dancers came from Russia.
What is a composer?
A composer is someone who writes music. They create the notes and melodies that musicians then play. Russia has given the world some truly beautiful music.
I want to hear some one day. What do Russian families eat? I always want to know what people eat in different places.
A very popular dish is called borscht. It is a warm soup made with beetroot, which gives it a deep red color. Families also love dumplings called pelmeni.
Red soup? That sounds a little surprising, but also kind of amazing.
It is hearty and warming, perfect for cold winters. Speaking of winters, snow is a very big part of life in Russia. Children love sledding and playing in the snow.
Okay, that part sounds really fun. What about those colorful buildings I saw in the book?
You are thinking of Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. It has those famous swirling, painted domes on top that look almost like a painting come to life.
It looked like something from a fairy tale. Is Moscow the capital city?
It is. Moscow is the capital and the biggest city in Russia. It is a very busy and lively place, with museums, parks, and a famous underground train system.
Russia sounds like it has so many different things all in one place. Cold places, warm places, beautiful buildings, yummy food.
