Koko:
Owlo, I found a huge beetle in the garden today! It was this big!
Owlo:
That sounds like quite a discovery, Koko. Beetles can be pretty large for insects.
Koko:
It made me think. What is the biggest animal in the whole world?
Owlo:
What a wonderful question! The biggest animal in the world is the blue whale.
Koko:
A blue whale? Is it bigger than an elephant?
Owlo:
Much, much bigger! A blue whale can be as long as three school buses parked end to end.
Koko:
Wow! Three whole buses? That is so big!
Owlo:
It truly is. Come, let's go to the library. I have a special book about whales.
Owlo:
Here we are. Look at this picture, Koko. See how enormous the blue whale is?
Koko:
It looks like a mountain in the water! Does it have legs?
Owlo:
No legs at all. Blue whales live in the ocean and swim using their strong tails.
Koko:
How heavy is a blue whale?
Owlo:
A blue whale can weigh as much as twenty elephants put together. That is incredibly heavy!
Koko:
Twenty elephants! That is a lot. What does it eat?
Owlo:
Blue whales eat tiny creatures called krill. Krill are smaller than your paw, but whales eat millions of them every day.
Koko:
Millions? The biggest animal eats the tiniest food? That is funny!
Owlo:
It does seem silly, doesn't it? But those tiny krill give the whale all the energy it needs.
Koko:
Can blue whales come on land like I can?
Owlo:
No, they must stay in the water. Their bodies are too heavy for land. The water helps hold them up.
Koko:
So they swim all day and all night?
Owlo:
Yes, they do. They also come up to breathe air, just like we do.
Koko:
They breathe air? But they live in water!
Owlo:
That is right. They have a special hole on top of their head called a blowhole. They shoot water up high when they breathe out.
Koko:
I wish I could see a blue whale someday. They sound amazing!
Owlo:
Maybe one day you will, Koko. Now, can you tell me what you learned about the biggest animal today?
Koko:
The biggest animal is the blue whale. It is as long as three buses! It lives in the ocean and eats tiny krill. It breathes air through a blowhole. I want to learn about other big animals next time!
Owlo:
Excellent summary, Koko. You learned so much today. I am proud of you.
Koko:
Thank you, Owlo. Learning with you is always fun!
