Koko:
Owlo, I have a very important question for you today. It has been on my mind all morning!
Owlo:
Oh my, that sounds serious, Koko. What is this big question of yours?
Koko:
I want to know about YOU for once. What is the bravest thing you have ever done?
Owlo:
The bravest thing I have ever done. Now that is a question I did not expect today.
Koko:
Come on, Owlo! You always know everything. You must have done something really, really brave.
Owlo:
Well, let me think carefully. Bravery is not always about doing something big and loud, you know.
Koko:
What do you mean? I thought brave meant like, fighting a dragon or jumping off something really tall.
Owlo:
I understand why you might think that. But real bravery is a little different from stories about dragons.
Koko:
Really? Then what IS bravery?
Owlo:
Bravery means doing something even when you feel scared or nervous. The fear is still there, but you do it anyway.
Koko:
Oh. So you can be brave AND scared at the same time?
Owlo:
Exactly right. In fact, if you are not scared at all, it is not really bravery. It is just easy.
Koko:
Wow. I never thought about it like that. So what was YOUR scary-but-brave moment, Owlo?
Owlo:
When I was young, about your age actually, I was terrified of speaking in front of others.
Koko:
YOU were scared? But you talk to me all the time and you never seem scared!
Owlo:
I was very scared back then. My wings would shake and my voice would go all wobbly.
Koko:
Your wings would shake? That is kind of hard to imagine. You always seem so calm.
Owlo:
One day, my teacher asked me to stand up and read a poem in front of the whole class. My heart was beating so fast.
Koko:
What did you do? Did you say no? Did you run away?
Owlo:
I thought about running away, I will be honest with you. But I took a deep breath, and I stood up.
Koko:
And then what happened?
Owlo:
My voice shook at the start. But I kept going, one word at a time. And then something wonderful happened.
Koko:
What? What happened?
Owlo:
I finished the poem. And everyone clapped. And I felt so proud of myself, right here in my chest.
Koko:
That actually makes me feel a little teary. That is such a good story, Owlo.
Owlo:
The best part was not the clapping. The best part was knowing that I did something hard, and I did not give up.
Koko:
I get scared too sometimes. Like when I had to go to a new class and I did not know anyone there.
Owlo:
And what did you do, Koko?
Koko:
I walked in anyway. Even though my tummy felt all funny and wobbly.
Owlo:
Then YOU were brave too, Koko. That wobbly tummy feeling is exactly what bravery feels like from the inside.
Koko:
I never knew I was being brave. I just thought I was being scared.
Owlo:
You were being both. And that is the whole point. Brave does not mean fearless. It means doing it anyway.
Koko:
Okay, so here is what I learned today. Bravery is not about fighting dragons or being super strong.
Koko:
It means doing something even when you feel scared and wobbly inside. Even Owlo had shaky wings once!
Koko:
And the proud feeling after you do the hard thing? That is the best feeling in the whole world.
Koko:
Next time I want to learn about other big feelings, like what to do when you feel really nervous before something important!
