Owlo, last night I looked out my window and saw the moon. It was round and bright like a big cookie.

O
Owlo

That sounds beautiful, Koko. The full moon is wonderful to see.

K
Koko

But the night before, it looked different. It was skinny like a banana. Does the moon change shape?

What a smart question, Koko. Many children wonder about that. The moon does not really change shape at all.

K
Koko

It does not? But I saw it change with my own eyes.

I know it looks that way. Come with me to the science lab. I want to show you something special.

Look at this orange ball. This will be our pretend moon. Can you hold it for me?

K
Koko

Okay! It is nice and round, just like the real moon.

O
Owlo

Perfect. Now I will turn off the lights. Do not worry, I have a flashlight here.

Ooh, it is dark in here now.

O
Owlo

Good. Now I will shine the flashlight on one side of your orange ball. What do you see?

K
Koko

I can see the bright side where the light hits. But the other side is dark and hard to see.

Exactly right. Now walk slowly around me in a circle. Keep holding the ball.

K
Koko

Okay, I am walking around you now.

O
Owlo

Do you see how different parts of the ball look bright as you move?

K
Koko

Yes! Sometimes I see the whole bright side. Sometimes I only see a little bright part on the edge.

That is exactly what happens with the real moon. The sun shines on it like my flashlight.

O
Owlo

As the moon moves around Earth, we see different parts that are lit up by the sun.

So the moon is always round like my ball?

O
Owlo

Yes, always. We just see different bright parts at different times. That makes it look like different shapes.

K
Koko

Oh! So when I saw the banana moon, I was only seeing a little bit of the bright part?

O
Owlo

Exactly right, Koko. You are thinking like a real scientist now.

This is so cool. Can we turn the lights back on now?

O
Owlo

Of course. Now, can you tell me what you learned today about the moon?

The moon does not really change shape. It is always round like this orange ball.

K
Koko

But the sun shines on it, and we see different bright parts as it moves. That makes it look like different shapes.

Tonight I will look out my window again. I want to see what shape the bright part is.

O
Owlo

That is wonderful, Koko. You can look at the moon every night and watch it change. Maybe you can draw pictures of what you see.

I will do that. And I will show my drawings to you next time. Thank you for teaching me about the moon, Owlo.

O
Owlo

You are very welcome, Koko. I love your curious questions. Keep looking up at the sky.
